The project "Navigating University Spaces: Students’ Aspirations, Boundaries, and Transformations in India and the Philippines" enquires into the radical transformations at universities due to the striking increases in numbers of students, the magnitude of student mobilities, even under COVID-19-conditions, and the heterogenization of student backgrounds. The aim of this project is to explore the increasing heterogeneity of students and the disparity of their chances in student life, especially among minority or the so-called ‘non-traditional’ students. How are inequalities and exclusions experienced, tackled and overcome within the social spaces of the university? Research will be conducted at universities in two Asian countries - India and the Philippines.
This project focuses on how experiences of (non-)belonging affect the chances of successfully completing a study course as well as cultivating a career afterwards.
The candidate will deploy a mix of qualitative methods such as participant observation, different interview technics and a collection of visual materials to explore students’ trajectories through their study course. Experiences with symbolic and social boundaries and with constellations of (non)belonging will be in the forefront of enquiry. In particular, the following tasks are performed:
