The research group „Organic Chemistry and Biocatalysis“ at the Faculty of Chemistry (University of Bielefeld) is led by Prof. Dr. Stephan Hammer and supported by the DFG Emmy Noether Program (New catalytic reaction development by laboratory evolution of protein-based catalysts). We use computational design and directed evolution to generate new enzyme function for challenging C-C and C-X bond forming reactions. Our aim is to discover, develop, understand and apply new catalytic reactions for synthetic organic chemistry by exploiting protein-based catalysts. The research is highly interdisciplinary and combines methods from synthetic organic chemistry, biochemistry, molecular and computational biology, and analytical chemistry.

Your Tasks
Our research group is international and interdisciplinary. We seek to hire an outstanding candidate with a strong background in organic chemistry to join our laboratory. The successful candidate will be involved in the realization of our research program. Starting date is summer 2025. Tasks include:
- organic synthesis (25 %)
- contribution to teaching and academic self-governance (up to 25 %, 2 teaching hours per week during the semester)
- biocatalysis (20 %)
- enzyme engineering (15 %)
- documentation and presentation of results (10 %)
- preparation of publications (5 %)

Your Profile
We expect
- scientific university degree (e. g. Master’s or Diploma) in chemistry or a related field
- solid theoretical knowledge and practical experience in synthetic organic chemistry, ideally demonstrated through academic projects or thesis work
- comprehensive knowledge and hands-on experience in NMR spectroscopy as well as GC and/or HPLC analysis
- excellent written and spoken English skills to ensure effective communication in an international environment
- strong writing skills and a high level of commitment to scientific excellence
- willingness and ability to proactively learn new methods and concepts
- high degree of initiative, creativity and self-motivation with the ability to set goals and meet deadlines
- excellent organizational and coordination skills
- strong team spirit and the ability to work collaboratively and responsibly
Preferred experience and skills
- knowledge and practical experience in protein biochemistry
- knowledge and practical experience in molecular biology
- written and spoken German skills
