The Faculty of Physics has the following two job openings in the area of lattice QCD/machine learning:

Research Positions (PhD Position) (m/f/d)
ID: Wiss26069
  • starting: 01.10.2026
  • Teilzeit 65 %
  • salary according to Remuneration level 13 TV‐L
  • befristet

The successful candidates will work in the research group of Prof. Gert Aarts. The research environment includes the Collaborative Research Center CRC TR211 "Strong-Interaction Matter under Extreme Conditions". The CRC (Bielefeld and partner universities in Frankfurt and Darmstadt) offers an inspiring environment and a broad scientific network, including a solid training and regular workshops in topics ranging from lattice QCD, quantum field theory to high-performance computing techniques and software development. The PhD projects will focus on 1) QCD under extreme conditions (XQCD) and 2) Machine Learning applied to lattice field theory (ML-LFT). In project 1) the candidate will join the FASTSUM collaboration (with members in the UK, Ireland, Italy, Denmark and Korea) and develop spectroscopic methods to analyse the effect of the thermal crossover in QCD on highly anisotropic lattices. In project 2) the candidate will develop generative AI methods, such as diffusion models, for LFTs beyond two dimensions. The projects are flexible and can be adapted based on the interests and background of the applicant.
