Prof. Dr. Malte Rösner’s group studies the properties of novel correlated quantum materials. A particular focus is on synergistic collaboration with groups in experimental physics. To this end, ab initio calculations are combined with modeling concepts and numerical many-body methods to enable material-specific theoretical predictions.


Your Tasks

The goal is to develop numerical methods that allow for the material-specific description of (strong) correlation effects in structurally complex systems. To this end, so-called “downfolding” algorithms will be applied and further developed to derive minimal many-body models. Building on this, these models will be analyzed using appropriate numerical treatments (“solvers”) to investigate, among other things, (unconventional) magnetic and/or optical properties of magnetic van der Waals materials and in particular mesoscale engineered CrSBr.

Tasks:

  • theoretical scientific work/research on (strongly) correlated materials (95 %)
  • participation in self-governance tasks (5 %)

Your Profile
We expect
  • completed university degree (Master or equivalent) in Physics
  • completed PhD in Theoretical Solid-State Physics
  • experience in the ab initio (material-specific) description of materials, for example using density functional theory and/or GW theory
  • experience in applying downfolding methods, for example cRPA, mappings to minimal spin models, or comparable approaches
  • good command of written and spoken English
  • extensive knowledge of Theoretical Solid-State Physics
  • ability to work independently, take initiative, and demonstrate commitment
  • ability to work effectively as part of a team

Preferred experience and skills
  • experience in describing electronic, optical, and/or magnetic correlation effects (e.g., using GW, BSE, DMFT, or magnetic simulations)
  • experience in ab initio descriptions of magnetic materials
  • experience in programming in Python and/or C++ and/or Fortran
  • experience working with high-performance computer systems
  • experience supervising bachelor’s and master’s theses
  • experience supervising exercises/tutorials
  • Knowledge of TRIQS or similar frameworks
  • Knowledge of academic self-administration
